Philip Eliason and Associates "Canberra Listening Post" and Positioning Service
PEAA offers an information service in Canberra to supplement your company's or industry groups activity in the area of collecting information on Federal Government policy and regulatory issues which affect their interests and making timely analysis for future decision-making.
PEAA's "Listening Post" service provides a focussed, cost effective monitoring, analysis and recommendation function from an independent expert group that will enhance your organisation's strategic decision-making.
For example, in the building and construction sector, these can relate to environmental and energy issues, product standards, trade (domestic and international), contracting and Commonwealth Government activity affecting the economy, interest rates and responses to housing and construction issues.
In this example, access to expert input can allow for enhanced commercial decisions for companies, or provide data to support comment or representation in the case of industry associations.
Industry associations, from time to time, cannot work directly on behalf of individual members on issues where, despite their importance to a firm, the association has a conflict of interest or a different policy position.
The "Listening Post" service collects and assesses information, adds comment and insight to your own judgement about of matters at the top of your government relations agenda.
If you wish, we can design interventions and public affairs strategies to influence Government and its officials and carry out specific activities on your behalf.
We operate this service either on a project or retainer basis for clients in the follow areas:
- building sector
- renewable energy natural resource management
- accounting and financial services
- ICT arena
- overseas firms interested in developing their understanding of Canberra and its effect on commercial development plans.
To ensure that our "Listening Post" service operates to best possible effect, PEAA suggests that a client selects between two to three core issues for observation. This focuses our opportunity to source information according to your needs. It allows reporting across more than one matter during a month (or more regularly). Reports assist you in preparation of material for your Board briefings as well as in representational strategies.
We can also work on a more frequent 'report-as-available' basis with comment passed directly to our clients' points-of-contact as matters arise. Our experience indicates that we will be able to address several matters for a client during a monthly reporting period.
The service is limited to clients with whom we do not have a conflict of interest.
Much of our work for clients is based on our long standing and personal contact with departments, advisers and interest groups. We have worked at the interface between industry and government for over 20 years and operated a specialist independent firm for over five years.
We can also monitor international issues affecting Australia's policy environment.
Using the building sector again as an example, the 17 July 2008 statement by the California Building Standards Commission announcing the adoption of the United States' First Statewide "Green" Building Code is likely to influence Australian consideration of the environmental impact of building in Australia.
We have found that new clients appreciate an initial engagement of six months and assess our service at that time. A "Listening Post" service can support your own activity within an industry association and it can assist reduce your senior executives' learning time about policy or regulatory issues affecting their business.
We invite you to see other parts of our website for insights into the firm.
