COFFEE

As he lives in Yemen, Philip's background in agriculture and sustainable development and engagement with the Arab world also leads naturally to his interest Yemen's historical place in coffee history. Coffee as a word has its origins in Arabic just as does Mocha which is a generic name for coffee derived from the Yemeni Red Sea port of Makha.

He represents one of Yemen's newest and most internationally engaged coffee traders. Coffee which Philip handles comes from small farms in the famed Haraaz region of high mountains near Sana'a in Yemen.

Unlike all other Yemen coffees available, this Haraaz coffee is hand sorted and graded according to ISO and SCAA specifications. It is organic and the coffee is traceable to farms receiving agronomic support to smooth production cycles and protect their organic production methods. Only low volumes of this coffee are available. It is sold to about 15 countries at the super premium end of the market.

A similar selection process applies to his Yemen Mocha coffee. This coffee comes from various regions of Yemen, selected and sorted according to strain of plant.

Both coffees, as they come from production areas quite restricted in size relative to bulk producers elsewhere, can be called estate coffees.

The coffee is airfreighted from Yemen.
