Stakeholder Management

A successful initiative needs the support of stakeholders.

Identifying and assessing stakeholder views is best facilitated by an informed third party. In the private sector, corporate relationships with the community, the Government and special interest groups are complex and need careful management.

For the public sector, Australia's strong sense of participation in policy development at all levels of government means that departmental staff must engage in consultative processes in most areas of their work.

Regular comment by the Federal Government's leading officials urging greater stakeholder involvement reinforces this pattern of activity, for Government itself, companies, industry associations and non-Government organisations.

Successful stakeholder relations needs information, creation of trust and clear processes leading to visible results. Dialogue should start early in an issue cycle and be ongoing. The best relationships are long term and open.
